Relative Strengths of Determinants of Teachers’ Intentions to Use Technology

Abstract

According to the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), behavioral intention is predicted by the three direct determinants; attitude toward the behavior (AB), subjective norm (SN), and perceived behavioral control (PBC). This study used the TPB to examine the underlying beliefs and the relative strengths of the three direct determinants of teachers’ intentions to utilize technology in three specific ways. An elicitation study of 37 teachers was used to identify salient beliefs and develop a closed-ended questionnaire. Results of the closed-ended questionnaire from 377 teachers revealed that AB, SN, and PBC all were significant predictors of teachers’ intentions. However, relative strengths varied among the three uses. Results provide specific information that can be used to design effective teacher development programs.
