Beyond “Bells and Whistles”: Lessons on Technology Integration From a New School of Education Facility

Abstract

Efforts to encourage faculty members to embrace and integrate educational technology into their instructional practice are hampered by a variety of factors, such as time constraints, inadequate support, outmoded hardware and software, and preferences for established habits. For administrators and IT professionals, overcoming these challenges requires strategies that take into consideration the physical and spatial resources available as well as the theoretical and conceptual approaches taken to the role of support and academic technology in the worklives of faculty. In this study, we analyze these issues in the context of a school of education’s move to a new academic building. Data is drawn from faculty interviews and a conversation with the administrator responsible for developing an accompanying academic technology strategy.
