Community College Part-Time Faculty Identity Discourses: A Longitudinal Study

Mon, April 16, 8:15 to 9:45am, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: First Level, East Ballroom A

Abstract

Research has shown that forming a professional identity is central in the process of becoming an effective teacher, yet little is known about the faculty identity development of nearly 70 percent of all faculty at community colleges—-namely, part-time faculty. Addressing this critical knowledge gap, this presentation presents findings from a longitudinal study that uses positioning theory and discourse analysis methods to closely examine the faculty identities of community college adjunct faculty teaching in the humanities. Implications and future research directions are discussed.
