The Social Network: The impact of Facebook on the Moral Culture of Schools

Abstract

This paper explores some of the issues, challenges and problems that k-12 teachers have experienced as a result of the ubiquitous presence of social networking tools. This exploration is placed within the context of applied professional ethics and digital ethics, which provide a foundation for understanding the moral nature of issues related to the use of ICT and social networking platforms. Results of the study highlight the concerns that participants have about the role that SNS plays in ethical issues such as cyberbullying as well as its impact on teachers professional identity and professional conduct. The paper also explores the value of digital ethics as a platform for dealing with complex issues emerging from evolving from web 2.0 technologies.
