Parent and Family Involvement in Teacher Education After No Child Left Behind

Abstract

This study updated in one State the work of Michael (2001) concerning parent and family involvement in teacher education. Research questions addressed whether this topic is more systematically addressed since passage of NCLB, the extent of coverage by university and alternative providers, and what approaches to parent and family involvement inform the curricula of teacher education programs. Mixed methods were used to describe and analyze data collected through a survey of 40 alternative and 31 university providers, a 41% return rate. Findings showed no significant differences in extent of coverage by type of provider. Qualitative analysis showed lack of specificity in the articulation of philosophical/theoretical approaches with some differences between the approaches taken by alternative and university providers.
