Principles Matter: Moral Leadership in a Community School Offering Integrated Services

Abstract

Integrated services in schools is part of a broader focus on school, family, and community partnerships. The premise of such partnerships is that collaboration across the multiple contexts that influence a child’s learning and development generates positive and enduring outcomes for the child as well as the larger society. This in depth qualitative case study describes how moral principles and purpose guided the focal principal’s leadership practices at an urban community school offering integrated services. More specifically, this paper describes how principled action impacted four critical leadership tasks described by Leithwood and Riehl (2005): setting the direction, developing people, developing the organization, and managing the organization.
