Self-Report of Engagement: Analysis of Two Scales

Fri, April 13, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: First Level, East Ballroom B

Abstract

The purpose of this presentation is to examine the usefulness of two scales for measuring user engagement in computer-based environments: the Flow State Scale and the User Engagement Scale. Both scales have been used to measure learner engagement in computer-based environments, but neither has been fully externally validated in such contexts. The results raise questions as to the appropriateness of the Flow State Scale for measuring engagement in such a context, but demonstrates the potential for User Engagement Scale for such purposes. However, it is important to note that a single latent construct for engagement in such a context was not found.
