Producing Methodological Data in Cross-Theoretical Conversation: Beyond the Scope of the Dissertation?

Abstract

The authors of this paper—two recent recipients of Ph.D.s in education—use the scope of this paper to explore the collection, analysis, and representation of what we call methodological data: the data that comes from the writing and theorizing of research when things do not goas planned. Specifically, we focus on the doing, naming, and telling about data analysis whose complexities we caught ourselves consistently erasing as we tried to contain it for the written product. Drawing upon contradictory grand level theories, poststructuralism and phenomenology, we write through our stuck places in order to find new spaces for action and to produce a text that invites conversation across paradigms about the complexities of qualitative research and data analysis.
