Emerging Technologies for Interactive Learning: What Can Be Learned From Literature Review and Case Studies

Abstract

The design of Interactive Learning Systems has shifted from exploiting new technologies to exploring the integral relationship between ICT and learning theories. To understand this shifting paradigm, this paper reviews educational technology research and discusses how emerging technologies are integrated in the teaching and learning process to facilitate the learner-content, learner-learner, learner-instructor, and learner-interface interactions, as well as the new opportunities and challenges brought by them. Technologies discussed in this paper are categorized into four types based on their distinct interactive features: Educational Networking, Web-based learning, Mobile learning, and Classroom equipment. Based on the case studies of four interactive learning systems selected from the literature, practical guidelines are proposed on how to apply emerging technologies to facilitate interactive learning.
