This qualitative research study examined the challenges field supervisors face as they begin conversations with preservice teachers about equity and social justice within the context of supervision. There was also a focus on how the supervisors negotiated these challenges. A phenomenographic lens was used to analyze data from field supervisor reflection journals and professional development sessions. These field supervisors not only face challenges related to supervision pedagogy, but to their own personal identity and whiteness. This study has implications for teacher educator professional development as well as using an social justice lens within field experiences.
