Educational Facility Designers’ Knowledge Construction of Learning Styles in an Online Learning Environment

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore how facility designers’ as online course participants’ construct knowledge about learning styles. A mixed methods approach incorporated both qualitative and quantitative data sources and data analysis procedures. Course participants’ learning-style preferences as measured by the Building Excellence Survey were analyzed using descriptive statistics. A multicase study approach was utilized to assess participants’ development of understanding the target construct through the following data sources: discussion board postings, written responses to weekly webbased prompts, culminating projects, course evaluations, and feedback forms. As a result, the researchers outlined a model of (a) how participating non-educators constructed knowledge about new educational constructs and (b) how the online learning environment contributed to this knowledge development.
