Student Choices, Community College Resources, and State Policies: A Multilevel Model Examining Influences on 2/4 Transfer

Abstract

This study will report findings from a multi-level random effects model to estimate how student choices and characteristics, community college resources, and statewide policies impact the probability of student transfer from two-year to four-year institutions (i.e. 2/4 transfer) among public community college students. This study will use a six-year time period (2003-2009) to better understand how factors such as students’ academic and social integration, expenditures on instruction and student services, and robustness of state transfer policy influence 2/4 transfer and increased degree expectations. The author’s prior research showed that the likelihood of students’ 2/4 transfer within three years improved with more frequent academic advising and attending institutions of less than 2,000 students and in states with statewide cooperative agreements.
