Abstract

While more attention to academic language in the content areas has been paid lately, we need to learn more about how middle school mathematics teachers can support English learners (ELs) mathematical development and intertwine it with their support for English language development. This paper describes middle grade teachers’ discussions on the benefits and challenges related to, i) engaging their ELs in mathematical problem solving that provides opportunities for creating visuals (diagrams or pictures useful for understanding or communicating about the mathematics) and, ii) employing language access and production strategies that allow ELs to better understand mathematical concepts and demonstrate their learning. This qualitative study uses data from professional development sessions’ field notes and transcripts, and interviews with teachers.
