Abstract

There has been a relative lack of attention to the doctoral function of preparing future faculty. Apprenticeship has existed in the research and scholarship aspects of doctoral education for decades; however, the integration of teaching, research, and service as the full duty of a professor has mainly been ignored (Walker et al., 2008). This paper presents a case study of a doctoral student’s apprenticeship in the full range of academic work.
The data is based on the authors’ (doctoral student and professor) observations, discussions, written artifacts, and reflections. Five themes emerged through qualitative analysis. Implications for system-level university practice are drawn as well as implications for individual faculty and students.
