Western Culture Influence on Youth Culture in China, Good or Bad?

Abstract

This paper examines the use of cultural studies with particular focus on postcolonialism to demonstrate the relationship between studies on youth culture (youth refers to the generation after 80s and 90s in this paper) and curriculum studies using interview, observation and literature review methods; and offers an interpretation of youth culture in China in the context of globalization. Interviews and observations are conducted in a high school in China. The study demonstrates that curriculum reformers should pay attention to educational practice where youth culture is a critical area to be studied and shows that globalization and student ‘oppression’ in society are the external and internal cause of why youth culture is westernized in China.
