Abstract

Findings from longitudinal and comparative studies using quantitative and qualitative data support a compelling argument that a sequence of four elementary mathematics content courses (as currently designed and taught) needs significant improvements to meet the needs of prospective elementary teachers and fulfill the intent of the state university system. This paper proposes that the outcomes of these courses can be improved by devoting professionally prepared tenure-track elementary mathematics educators to the teaching of these important content courses. These improvements would be particularly beneficial in the context of implementing the Common Core State Standards for school mathematics.
