Spaces of Homelessness: Implications for School and Community Intervention

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to learn about how multiple spaces of homelessness shape families’ educational experiences in order to develop school and community understandings of how to best serve them. The study is relevant considering that not only are more students experiencing homelessness in the U.S. than in any other times in recent memory, but the places in which they are homeless are increasingly diverse. We need to know more about students’ and families’ experiences in these diverse settings if we are to effectively address their needs. The guiding research question for the study is: How—and to what extents—are the diverse spaces in which students and families experience homelessness associated with their school-related experiences?
