The Wisdom of Youth: Using Digital Conversations to Teach Preservice Teachers About Urban Youth's Literacies

Abstract

Changes in society and media have shifted literacy practices of youth, altering the texts they produce and consume, as well how they make meaning from these texts. Drawing upon sociocultural literacy (Moje and Lewis,2007) and a multiliteracies framework (New London Group, 1996), this study explores how we can use digital culture to bridge the gap between in- and out-of-school literacies, as well as between middle-class teachers and urban youth. Through in-class collaboration of high school students in South Central Los Angeles and pre-service teachers in central Illinois via digital tools, this study offers insights into the literacy practices of urban youth, tools pre-service teachers can use to engage learners, and avenues for engendering urban youth toward academic dispositions.
