A Synthesis of the Research on Community Service Learning in Science Teacher Education

Abstract

Few studies have examined the potential of community service learning (CSL) within the context of science teacher education, despite recent recommendations urging stronger connections between teacher education programs and community schools. To respond to the research question: "What is the impact of CSL on science teacher candidates?", we conducted a systematic research synthesis on CSL and its potential to foster growth in pedagogical knowledge and promote eupraxia or good teaching practice. The synthesis was undertaken by a systematic review of databases in education and teacher education and science teacher education journals for empirical outcomes related to (science) teacher knowledge of pedagogy, children, and the teaching profession. Findings helped to shape future directions for research and practice on community service learning.
