With the increasing impact of globalization, economic turbulence, and neoliberal agendas on education, the current situation presents teachers and educators with tremendous challenges and yet an opportunity to build a new movement and a better future for public education. This ongoing research examines how pre-service teachers construct their knowledge base in critical literacy and social justice at the early stage of the teacher education program. The results offer a critical analysis of the challenges confronted by the preservice teachers. The implications of the study suggest an assessment tool that helps preservice teachers assess their own growth in the process of transforming the social justice complexities and global realities into a comprehensive and meaningful literacy instruction.
