Doctoral Students’ Research Productivity: Does Involvement in Doctoral Signature Pedagogies Make a Difference?

Abstract

This study examined the relationship between doctoral students’ perceived level of involvement in doctoral signature pedagogies and their research productivity in the form of conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications. Doctoral candidates from three public institutions in the southwest USA were sampled, and data were collected using a web-based survey. Preliminary findings reveal good psychometric integrity of the measurement scores of survey items measuring doctoral students’ perceived level of involvement in doctoral signature pedagogies, and a meaningful predictive relationship between faculty mentorship and research productivity, although results differ between students attending a Research University and those attending Doctoral/Research Universities.
