Shared Success: First-Generation College-Bound Latinas/os Giving Back

Abstract

Through qualitative inquiry, this study presents the voices of a group of Latino/a public high school seniors who are graduating and will be attending 4-year colleges and universities this upcoming fall. As first-generation college-bound students, their voices tell of the immense excitement and responsibility that they feel as a result of achieving this academic goal while also revealing the challenges they have overcome and the support systems they have utilized to get to this place. Findings are discussed in terms of the need for schools and communities to work together to provide support structures for Latino/a youth and the need for researchers to study their successes.
