Utilizing PhotoVoice for Complementary and Emergent Data Analysis of Postsecondary Experiences of Children of Immigrants

Abstract

Qualitative data collection methods (e.g., interviews, Photovoice documentation, and reflective memo writing) were employed to better understand how the college experiences of children of immigrants and how their family relationships, immigrant histories, and responsibilities within their families influenced their postsecondary experiences. The purpose of this proposal is to demonstrate the ways in which participatory action research through multiple qualitative methodologies, photography and reflective memo writing, can be utilized concurrently as distinctive methods to explore a topic from more than one angle. This study addressed and contextualized the experiences of second-generation immigrant students in college, particularly with financial burdens and concerns that arose within their family contexts compounded with increasing postsecondary expenses (e.g., tuition, fees, cost of living).
