England is at the vanguard of an international shift in policy towards broader development of interorganizational networks for initiating and sustaining systemic change in education. However, the adequacy of current conceptual and analytic frameworks for generating understanding about networks has been called into question from several different perspectives. Recent literature on interorganizational networks is widely varied in purpose, methodological approach, and conceptual underpinnings. This review employs Critical Interpretive Synthesis, an approach to systematic review that draws on interpretive reviews. The review contributes substantively to conceptualizations of interorganizational networks; methodologically through a novel application of Critical Interpretive Synthesis to systematic review in education; and theoretically in the articulation of ‘nomination’ as a synthetic construct.
