This paper describes third year nursing students’ perceptions of the effectiveness of Problem Based Learning (PBL) as a teaching /learning strategy at a nursing school in Trinidad and Tobago. A mixed method triangulated study design with concurrent collection of quantitative and qualitative data was utilised to answer the research question. Thirty 30 third year nursing students were exposed to the problem based learning sessions. A self administered survey questionnaire with ten qualitative and three qualitative questions along with a clinical decision making test were administered. Students agreed that PBL caused a change in their thinking process, their responses when categorized included themes such as enhanced critical thinking skills; better assessment skills and information gathering skills.
