Abstract

Religious education plays an important role in Hong Kong schools but religious values are diverse. Students may come from Buddhist, Taoist, Muslim or Christian (Protestant and Catholic) backgrounds. Religious education is a compulsory subject in religious schools but there is also a strong emphasis on moral education in all Hong Kong schools. Yet little is known about students’ attitudes to religion or their engagement in religious activities. The purpose of this paper is to study Hong Kong students’ participation in religious activities and attitudes towards religion via studying the data generated by The International Civics and Citizenship Study (ICCS) 2008/2009. It also helps to study the relations among students’ religious values, civic knowledge and civic attitude
