Improving Schools in Challenging Circumstances: A Comparative Case Study at Eight German Schools

Abstract

Schools with a low socioeconomic status situated in deprived areas have to deal with numerous challenges. Therefore, improving these schools is a difficult process. Still, a number of school effectiveness studies show that there are also so-called improving schools in challenging circumstances. These schools are able to gain good results in achievement tests against the odds and despite being located in a deprived area. This study aims to shed light on the improvement strategies of eight improving high poverty schools in Germany. The research project is funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research. First results of this project will be presented at the meeting.
