In this proposal we present the iterative design, development, and evaluation of Sammy the Squirrel, a collaborative game app based on virtual 10-frames for PreK (ages 3-4) learners to acquire basic understanding of number sense. This effort extends extant work creating developmentally appropriate educational applications on interactive tabletops for PreK learners. In line with recent work on interactive tabletop applications for young learners, our design supports three critical features: 1) allow children to be directly involved in a game, requiring touch, sound, and sight; 2) Support individual and collaborative efforts on the same surface; and 3) Design virtual manipulatives to afford many of the types of interaction similar to physical manipulatives.
