The purpose of this study is to analyze the learning effect differences between digital and paper textbooks. Five hundred and five 5th and 6th graders were divided into digital and paper textbook groups and used the textbooks for two years. The Results showed that the academic achievement scores of digital textbook group were significantly higher than paper textbook group. Direct effect of prior knowledge on self-directed learning ability and academic achievement and of self-directed learning ability on learning attitude were significant in both groups. Gender and learning attitude, however, have direct effect on academic achievement only in the digital textbook group. The learning effect of digital textbooks was founded in learners with low prior knowledge.
