Empowering Information Technology Teachers in Rural Schools: A Needs Analysis

Abstract

This paper reflects on the first phase of a research project aimed at the empowerment of Information Technology (IT) teachers in rural schools in the North-West province of South Africa. In order to empower IT teachers, the first phase aimed at understanding the unique challenges and needs of these teachers. Qualitative research methodology was used to determine IT teachers’ experiences of teaching a difficult subject like IT in rural schools. We report on the unique needs and challenges that these teachers experience and indicate that these needs should be taken into account in order to facilitate success among all learners. We conclude by indicating the scholarly significance of the study.
