The study presented in this paper examines the criteria-oriented assessment of learner outcomes in biology. The criteria were created by the teachers. As another criteria, the study includes a written model solution that is created by the teachers. Teachers evaluate the learner’s achievements and assign grades. We also tested to what degree the teachers grading can be predicted by an automated knowledge assessment software that helps to compare texts for their structural and semantic similarity (model solution vs. learners’ solution). The results of the work in progress will allow first conclusions about particular aspects of grading that could not be automated. We also discuss directions on how to further investigate the boundaries between classic manual assessment and automated descriptions.
