The purpose of this paper is to report on the relationship developing between local indigenous Māori (iwi, tribe) and tertiary institutions within post-earthquake Christchurch, New Zealand. This paper presents two brief case studies brought about by the recent earthquakes in Christchurch New Zealand and the resulting opportunities for developing iwi collaboration within higher education. Given the theme of the 2012 AERA meeting “Non Satis Scire: To Know Is Not Enough”, we present two tribal led initiatives in educational institutions which aim to bring about change, not only meeting iwi aspirations but also addressing inequity in education. The cases demonstrate that the collaboration partnership exceeded iwi expectation yet still encountered barriers to authentic power sharing.
