Defending Creativity and the Arts in a Time of Testing

Tue, April 17, 8:15 to 9:45am, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: First Level, East Ballroom B

Abstract

In this paper, we defend the inclusion of a graduate level course that attempts to prepare elementary teacher candidates to integrate the arts and other creative acts and processes as a natural and essential part of the school curriculum. Using qualitative methodology we found support for such a course through interviews, journal reflections and class discussions with our students. These findings support the literature on the importance of the arts in education. Implications for teachers are also included.
