Teaching Strategies to Foster Academic Talent and Giftedness Among Students in Higher Education

Abstract

The aim of this study is to increase our understanding of teaching strategies for gifted and talented students in higher education. First, we systematically reflect on the literature from different perspectives and second we completed a empirical study, analyzing data collected in the United States and the Netherlands about teachers’ perceptions on teaching strategies for gifted and talented students. The analysis of the literature revealed that teaching strategies emphasizing community, freedom and academic competences highlight effective strategies to foster academic talent. The empirical study revealed that teachers employ different teaching strategies for gifted and talented students than for regular students. In general teachers state that honors students needs interaction and interdisciplinary scholarship, while regular students need guidance and clear explanations.
