The purpose of this study is to understand faculty members’ naturalistic practices in social networks in general, and on Twitter in particular. A constant-comparative analysis of Tweets and scholarly practice indicates that Twitter-using scholars share information, resources and media, provide opportunities for classroom learning, request teaching-related and research-related assistance, provide help and support, manage their identity, network with others, and highlight their participation in other social media. These findings assist the field in understanding the emerging practice of scholarly participation in online networks.
