Abstract

Within the PISA Assessment it has been shown that German pupils possess significantly higher expertise in the domain of analytical cross-curricular problem solving than the OECD average, whereas their competencies regarding scientific literacy are only average. It seems that they possess cognitive potential but they are unable to use it adequately in scientific school subjects. The present study tries to fill this gap to some extent. The construct of the ability to solve subject-specific problems in different scientific school subjects will be investigated. Components considered as necessary are the ability to self-regulate as well as different types of knowledge. Instruments to investigate the different components have been developed and satisfying reliabilities have been measured in the pilot study.
