Abstract

A laboratory section of a university introductory Earth and Oceans Science course (EOS 120) was redesigned to emphasize constructivist pedagogical strategies advocated by the Faculty of Education. Over three years student seeking admission to a teacher education program choosing these sections (n = 60) were compared to their peers enrolled in regular laboratory sections (n= 421) for changes in achievement, changes in attitudes towards Earth science, ability to correct prior misconceptions and overall achievement. Students in the education section showed larger gains in the correction of their prior misconceptions as well overall achievement, suggesting the importance of partnerships between Faculties for the preparation of teachers and the pedagogy of students in science education overall.
