Learning Competencies Required for Self-regulated Learning With Expository Texts

Abstract

The study focuses on the competencies “activating strategy knowledge” and “activating strategy skills” required for a successful self-regulated learning (SRL) with expository texts. The aim of the study was to evaluate new tests to assess both competencies and to analyze whether the discrete assessment can be used to identify learning deficiencies validly (e.g. production deficiency). In order to initiate SRL and to assess students’ learning outcome an expository text was administered to 559 ninth grade high-school students. In addition, the competencies “activating strategy knowledge” and “activating strategy skills” were assessed using newly developed/adapted tests. The results revealed that both competencies were predictive for learning outcome. Furthermore, the suitability of the new tests to validly identify learning deficiencies could be demonstrated.
