Abstract

This study analyzed the factors that affect occupational aspiration among Korean high school students by focusing on working-class and patriarchy. Results showed that the ideal occupational aspiration more affected by SES and social support than the realistic occupational aspiration. On the level of the realistic occupational aspiration, otherwise, the interaction terms between patriarchal consciousness, gender and working-class have a significant effect. Specifically if male students have strong patriarchal consciousness, it has a positive correlation with the realistic occupational aspiration. However, in the case of manual working-class it has a negative correlation. In addition, material support has more strong effects on children from manual working-class. This finding suggests that socioeconomic factors and working-class culture operates as a mechanism of reproducing class.
