Validation of a Video Tool to Assess Preservice Teachers’ Professional Vision

Abstract

Professional vision is a main aspect of teacher expertise. However, there is still a lack of appropriate assessment instruments. The video-tool Observer assesses professional vision contextualized yet standardized. Our study aims at validating this tool by extending its application to a large and heterogeneous sample. Analyses of the data of N =1029 pre-service teachers using methods based on item response theory showed that the video-tool Observer captures the theoretical structure of professional vision. Moreover, a multivariate analysis of variance on the basis of a subsample (n = 488) revealed that students in the primary and secondary teacher education track performed similarly in the tool. These results contribute to the successful implementation of the video-tool Observer in teacher education in Germany.
