Postsecondary Education for Students With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: An Action Plan for Michigan

Abstract

At Michigan’s 2007 statewide symposium on postsecondary education (PSE), State Superintendent Michael Flanagan indicated that the event was merely the start of what should be a rich future of unlimited possibilities for young adults with disabilities. However, the reality is that less than 5% of Michigan students with ID/DD are currently attending postsecondary programs, including technical schools, vocational internships, community colleges, and four-year institutions. Few students with disabilities have technical certificates, associate or baccalaureate degrees. Our vision has not translated into universal practice. The current paper outlines a statewide needs assessment and PSE Action Plan for Michigan that was conducted by the Developmental Disabilities Institute at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan on behalf of the Michigan Developmental Disabilities Council.
