Using Eye-Tracking Technology to Explore the Effect of Computer Animations and Redundant Onscreen Text on Viewers’ Processing of Multimedia Learning Content

Abstract

This study utilized eye-tracking technology to explore the impact of computer animations and redundant onscreen text information on viewers’ cognitive processes of web-based multimedia information. Sixty college students participated in this study and were assigned into either experimental or control group. The results showed that computer animations did not promote more detailed information processing than static illustrations according to viewers’ eye movements. Processing animated illustrations might have consumed too much of the viewers’ cognitive resource and hindered viewers’ information processing efficiency. Onscreen text was not found to have a negative impact on viewers' information processing of the learning content. Discussions on the results and suggestions for future studies are provided in this paper.
