The purpose of this paper is to explore Gilles Deleuze’s cinema-philosophy and its potential usefulness to education. The paper outlines what Deleuze’s cinema-philosophy ‘looks like’, conceptually, theoretically, methodologically and, from this, what a Deleuzian reading of the visual may offer in terms of innovative visual methods and practical empirical approaches in education. The exploration has at its heart the question ‘how can Deleuze’s philosophy contribute to a visual sociology of education?’ The paper draws on data from two empirical education research projects in which doctoral and undergraduate students employed video as a creative medium for self-expression, as a method for constructing visual meanings about embodied, performative identity practices, and for the formation of multi-dimensional reflexive narratives.
