The purpose of this presentation is to present the key findings of a comprehensive review of the research literature on writing development in young children who are deaf or hard-of-hearing and to describe the instructional approaches used to foster deaf children’s writing development in the early childhood program. No such review currently exists. Procedures and techniques related to directed content analysis, constant comparison, and interpretative analytic methods are being used to synthesize empirical research from the early 1990s to the present. This project has the potential to contribute to our knowledge of instructional approaches that support deaf and hard of hearing children’s early writing development in particular, and literacy learning more broadly, and to provide direction for further empirical work.
