Perspective on Collective Leadership From School and Community Leaders

Abstract

The notion of collective or shared, or the term de jure, distributed leadership in schools is nothing new. Leadership in schools and within communities has been researched to better understand normative practice and impact on achievement as well as elements of social justice. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the individual perceptions of school and community leaders as they come to understand the notion of collective leadership. This study asked 56 participants to sort a set of statements associated with “collective leadership.” Q methodology was used to factor analyze these perspectives. Results provide and insight into conceptions and the practice of collective leadership.
