The ability to accurately judge one’s own performance is important for effective self-regulated learning. Young learners often overestimate their level of comprehension. Therefore, the aim was to improve children’s (N = 95, M age 10.6 years, SD .79) judgment accuracy when judging their comprehension after studying the meaning of key concepts. Effects of two instructions were compared: delayed judgments of learning (JOL) and sentence generation. Results show that the sentence generation instruction improved pre-test discrimination accuracy, but not post-test absolute accuracy: it led to more overconfidence. As such, this study also demonstrates the need to use multiple accuracy measures, especially when the aim is to derive guidelines for improving both discrimination and calibration accuracy in the classroom.
