Learning More in Math Than Literacy: After-School Students’ Achievement Gains

Sat, April 14, 8:15 to 10:15am, Sheraton Wall Centre, Floor: Fourth Level, South Granville

Abstract

From 2008-2010, the Louisiana Department of Education funded three after-school programs, 21st Century Community Learning Centers, Supplemental Educational Services, and Temporary Assistance to Needy Families After-School For All, with a total of 57,911 students. Although there is variability across program organization and activities, all three target their services to underachieving students from low-income families. Mean achievement score comparisons indicate the after-school students’ gains in math and English Language Arts (ELA) are significantly greater than for matched, non after-school students. Also, after-school students made greater gains in math than ELA. Overall, achievement improvements were more likely for students in K–8, of specific ethnicities, and with greater math and ELA activity hours. Additional outcome results will be discussed.
