Gender and Interdisciplinary Science: The Participation of Female Scientists in Interdisciplinary Fields

Abstract

Although little empirical research has considered the topics of diversity in scientific participation and interdisciplinary scientific behavior as interrelated, the question is significant to influencing the practice of science within American colleges and universities. This proposal examines the results of an exploratory qualitative case study which focuses on the preferences of women enrolled in a doctoral program for learning styles, work environments, and career goals that may be aligned with interdisciplinary programs. The conclusions from this case study offer insight into the gendered nature of interdisciplinarity. Given the increased attention given to issues of equity, access, and participation in science, multiple avenues towards diversifying the nation’s talent pool are essential. Interdisciplinary science offers one important opportunity towards that goal.
