Abstract

I am a seventh grade English teacher with four years of teaching experience in a large suburban school district in northern California. My school is generally high-performing but I serve a small group of low-performing students. I found myself cycling through three questions that informed the direction of my practice. First, how could I build a reading community in my classroom? Second, how could I have students write reading responses without teaching formulaic writing? Finally, how could I have students use and give content-level feedback to improve their writing? This paper addresses how I was able to successfully build literacy in my classroom.
