A special education program's ability to adequately prepare future special education teachers is essential to the development of a high quality special education teacher workforce. Many states require that potential teacher pass minimum competency examinations prior to awarding teaching certification. The purpose of the current research was to gather information about student performance on the Common Assessment for Special Education Teachers: Reading (CAST-R), a final exam for a language development course, in order to determine how well student performance on this assessment predicts performance on the state reading exam, the Virginia Reading Assessment for Elementary and Special Education Teachers (VRA). Implications of findings for research and practice are discussed.
